HELP!! It still won't run with Windows Vista!!

I read the entire thread about installing this program with windows vista and still will not run. I tried running it as an xp emulation and to change it to run as administrator..... however there was one thing I didn't understand..... I didn't know how to right click in setup and set to run as administrator.... please help I am getting so frustrated!

Not in setup

Not in setup
First install the program then right-clic on your zs4 shortcut on your desktop and run as administrator

Still wouldn't work

i tried that... it still wouldn't open. What else can I do?? Am I doing something wrong?

There has to be a solution.

Hi All,

I have also tried all the suggestions posted in the forums to get it running in Vista, but no luck.

My machine:
Toshiba A200 Laptop
Vista Home Premium
Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz
2 GB RAM
[[I will provide other hardware specs when I am next at home using my laptop]]

It came with Vista, and I probably would have changed to XP except I was told I could have issues getting things working as there aren't any proper XP drivers :-S

Confirming what happens when I try running ZS4:  I select the Run As Admin option and after clicking on OK and continue etc, the cursor spins indicating it is loading, but then the cursor returns to the regular arrow and nothing happens.

I noticed however in the Task Manager => Processes tab, that the "zweistein.exe" process is still running, using approx 9500 KB of memory.  If you then try running ZS4 again, it does the same thing and you end up with 2 "zweistien.exe" processes.  To me this is indicating that it hasn't actually crashed completely, possibly just stuck trying to do something - loading the interface maybe??

Complete speculation, but...the buttons/tabs etc in ZS4 are very different in appearance from any other program I have used.  I'm wondering whether some sort of interface or Runtime Environment software (kind of like GTK+ or JRE) (or DLLs) is present natively in XP but not present in Vista.

Would love to hear a reply from someone who has ACTUALLY got ZS4 working in Vista (if any even exist), or from the ZS4 programmers about any solutions they might be able to recommend.

I have been playing around with ZS4 during my lunch hours (using XP at work), really enjoying it, but really want to start using it at home on my much faster laptop.

Thank you in advance for any replies.

Cheers

here's what you do

Above all, love.

I run a Dell XPS 720 with Vista Ultimate. Remove your files and redownload them. Before you unzip your files, go to properties and change the capatability to xp sp2. then unzip in administrator mode. After it is set up, change the .exe file in the same manner - first go to properties and then change compatability to xp sp2 and then run in administrator mode. Give this program about 10 - 15 seconds to respond.    - yur frend, pianodavy

Still no luck :-(

Hi pianodavy,

Thanks for your reply.  Unfortunately though for me, it still does not work.  Just to confirm this is what I did (interpreting your instructions):

* Unistalled ZS4.
* Re-downloaded the installer.
* Went into Properties of the install file and set it Run as Admin and set it to run in Win XP SP2 Compatibility mode.
* Ran the install.
* Set the Properties of the zweistein.exe to Run as Admin and set it to run in Win XP SP2 Compatibility mode.
* Let it sit for 10 - 15 minutes, nothing came up.

At work, as a test, I thought to try using the Ulteo Virtual Desktop (allows running Linux apps in Windows), to try running the Linux version of ZS4 in Windows, the installer for it started to work when I run it using the su command to run it as root, but when the Continue or Exit screen appears it just doesn't respond when clicking on Continue.

Ah well.....I'm conceding defeat on this one for the time being, can't really expect the programmers to fix it to work on every system, considering it is completely free software.  Might have to start saving up for Adobe AfterEffects *checks price* (gosh! it ain't cheap!  LOL)....maybe there's an AviSynth plugin out there somewhere that can do chroma key better than its current ColorKeyMask function, which requires multiple uses and still leaves slight green outlines.

Having the same problem

I've tried everything mentioned here. This program simply cannot run in Vista. I wish I was alerted about this before I downloaded. Anyone know if or when a Vista compatable version of this program will be released?

Not Yet appearently

Yeah, I just noticed that it wasn't set for Vista now.  I get it's free and all, but Vista's here and in high use,  and Windows 7 is just around the corner.  Something like this should really be taken care of by now.   Even if it is a free program.

I too hope for a Vista compatible version soon as well.

I have the same problem.I

I have the same problem.
I run vista home premium 64bit SP1

Process Explorer tells me there are 3 threads running
zweistein.exe+0x22f7
ntdll.dll!TpCallbackMayRunLong+0xfa
ntdll.dll!TpSimpleTryPost+0x1afa

The stack of the last 2 threads looks like this
wow64cpu.dll!TurboDispatchJumpAddressEnd+0x6a9
wow64cpu.dll!TurboDispatchJumpAddressEnd+0x55d
ntdll.dll!NtDelayExecution+0x15
ntdll.dll!LdrInitializeThunk+0x10

and the stack for zweistein.exe is this
wow64cpu.dll!TurboDispatchJumpAddressEnd+0x6a9
wow64cpu.dll!TurboDispatchJumpAddressEnd+0x4a6
ntdll.dll!ZwWaitForKeyedEvent+0x15
ntdll.dll!TpSetWait+0xf2
ntdll.dll!TpSetPoolMaxThreads+0x18b6
ntdll.dll!TpSetPoolMaxThreads+0x1ac4
ntdll.dll!TpSetPoolMaxThreads+0x1c18
ntdll.dll!TpSetPoolMaxThreads+0x1e42
ntdll.dll!TpAllocTimer+0x99
ntdll.dll!RtlCreateTimer+0x13e
kernel32.dll!CreateTimerQueueTimer+0x40
atiumdag.dll!gfxInitInteropServices+0xf472
atiumdag.dll!DllMain+0x1719
DDRAW.dll!DirectDrawCreate+0x35d6
DDRAW.dll!DirectDrawCreate+0x3488
DDRAW.dll!ReleaseDDThreadLock+0x1f65
DDRAW.dll!DirectDrawCreate+0x4dc
DDRAW.dll!DirectDrawCreate+0x3e
ntdll.dll!RtlReleasePebLock+0x28

You could release a debug version of the program.
It would output some text to the console and people post that text here.

Yodelingrats To The Rescue (Hopefully)

Now I was having problems with this too. I'm going to explain this all the best I can so please just hang on. I downloaded t@b Video Editor in Firefox. I selected the save button then double clicked it and I clicked Run. I just let all the custom installation options go on (meaning I didn't change anything). Then I opened it. This is where I came into some problems as I'm sure some of you have. I don't know where you had the problems but to everyone who could get it open and just couldn't open the files from the original folder listen up. Depending on where your video folder is I'm sure you take the shortest way you can. My video's are in the videos folder in my User folder. I kept questioning "Where are my videos?" until I remembered that there's more then one way to get to that folder. So I took the long way going through my computer. This is what you do:

  • Go to the C: folder
  • Select the folder Users here
  • Select User
  • Select whichever user you are (mine is just simply my name)
  • At this point I simply selected videos and voila, there were all my movies
So take the long route and it should work. If it doesn't work for you it did work for me so there has to be some trick to it even if this isn't it. Navigate to your folder however you have to. For me I simply went in this order to get there:
                              C:/Users/yodelingrats/Videos
Good luck to everyone who's willing to try it sorry if this doesn't help but as I said this works great for me so keep trying and eventually you'll get it.

Getting it to open at all is the challenge

Thanks Yodelingrats for your input.

Although I believe for most that it is getting the software to actually run that is the problem....bloody Microsoft.....If something runs in Windows XP it should (in an ideal world) definitely work in Windows Vista when running a program in Win XP compatibility mode.

Yodelingrats, if you have managed to actually get ZS4 running in Vista, that is great.  Is there anything special about your computer setup allowing it to run on Vista that you might be able to share with the rest of us please?

  • What version of Vista?
  • What version of ZS4 are you running?
  • Any particular modified settings in registry/control panel?
  • Hardware specs?
  • Prebuilt computer (HP, Dell, Toshiba etc) or a custom build?
  • Anything else you can think of?

Probable new Version

I've got a version here which was built with the latest MS Visual Studio. This "should work on Vista....

Running on Vista

I had another app on Vista that would not run.
Some one suggested don't install in the default "program files"
So I created a dir c:\opt and installed my app into that
It then worked.
Perhaps this might work for you !

Can't install under XP

So how do you install this under XP?

I try and get an error message, "unable to register the dll/ocx, loadlibrary failed code 14001" from a dll called tabdec.dll

(yeah, i would have started a separate thread, but this idiot forum says i'm not allowed to start new threads)

hm.. interesting...

Running program with Vista

I also tried to run the program through Vista with no success even after changing it to run in XP mode.

However, by going to Tucows and downloading it under the program name Zwei - Stein Video Editor it downloaded and ran immediately.  I beleive it may be an older version, but it does work.

RE: Probable new Version

Hi countinn,
Sincere thanks for sorting this out.  The version built with the last MS Visual Studio works a treat on my lappie running Vista.
Thanks for taking the time to look into this and help us who are (unfortunate enough!) to be running Vista.
Cheers  :-)mrshr3d
