File locations

This is probably a windows-only thing...

I have a directory full of links to files in another directory on another disk. This occured when I ran out of disk space and had to move the original files. ZS4 doesn't want to pick up the linked files. I was expecting that my old .zs4 files would still be OK, and just pick the files off the new disk. In fact, the File panel doesn't show links at all.

As long as we're thinking about this: sometimes I have files (or links) that have the same name. It would be nice if the File Properties panel would display the directory that the file is located in. Bonus if I could change it.

How about having a warning and dialog if ZS4 cannot find a file? That is, if I move a file, when ZS4 tries to open it - and it's gone - a dialog would pop up and allow me to specify (browse) the new location.

file finding

As a temporary work-around, did you try putting the ZS4 project into the directory containing the actual footage?

As far as we know, if ZS4 does not find a piece of footage in a project, it will scan the directory in which the project file is contained, including any subfolders of that directory.

Temporary work around

That's cool. I'll try that. My work around was much less civilized - I
created an identical directory structure on the new disk, then used a
hex-editor to change the drive letter in the .zs4 file.

More file finding

Is there a hot key to refresh the file listing? If I add a file to the
directory that I've been loading from, I have to contract and re-expand
the directory to see the new file.

When you make the file-find change, how are you going to handle
multiple files? If I've moved a bunch of files to the same place, it
would be nice if the second and subsequent browse would start at the
last location that was selected from.

File Browsing

I agree, and F5 (refresh) key for the file browser treeview is a very good idea. Dito for browse locations revisited. There is a work-around (under windows and *nix fltk guis).

At the bottom left of the zs4 screen there should be a "folder" icon. Under windows this will pop up the standard windows file browser (which has F5 support). Under FLTK systems (linux, os x) this should pop up the FLTK "File Chooser" dialog, which is at least faster than the integrated file browser.

I'm adding this to my to-do list as well.
