Dynamic Depth Controls

ZS4 so far is a two dimensional video compositing engine with timeline controls and a large set of bundled video effects. it is, however, possible to dynamically arrange the depth (z-position) of component video streams. This article assumes that you are familiar with the default zs4 rendering strategy, where the bottom (child) track in the project treeview is rendered into the parent (mixer) track first and the top child is rendered last which results in the basic compositing strategy.

the idea here is to allow a track variable of child (component) tracks to indicate both: the sequence of rendering with in the parent mixer track and and the relative size based on quasi-distance to the observer. to achieve a compositing strategy that allows for variable positions one follows the following steps:

make the containing mixer the "current track" by clicking on it's little [i] button in the track/arrangement pane. this should result in it info/properties panel showing up in the upper half panel under the tab id's "track->properties".
This containing mixer needs to be switched to pseudo-depth sequencing, to make sure that the farthest away child is rendered first. for this you click on the "turn pseudo-depth on/off" toggle button and macke sure that it is pressed down. (this toggle is found at the bottom of the properties panel and is a dark rectangle with a diagonal red arrow.)
for each child track manipulate its relative distance to the observer by modifying the child tracks "distance" variable.This is easyest done by making the child track the "current" track and using the "draw line to indicate distance" button to draw a vertical line. if the line is drawn upwards then the object will move away (and get smaller as a result). If the line is drawn downward the object moves closer (gets bigger).

this procedure might require some more explanatory remarks.

The unit of measure in this pseudo 3D thing is the size (height) of 1 pixel of the mixer track.
The observer stands four times the height of the mixer away from the mixer "plane" (-(4*MixerHeight) Pixels).
Objects get bigger while the distance value gets smaller. If a distance is smaller (lower) than the observer, results are garbage.
The whole thing essentially moves objects (child tracks) closer to the center of the mixer bitmap and reduces size, when the distance value is increased (line drawn upward).
IMPORTANT: This works best if the objects in the child tracks are "keyed". They ideally are mostly transparent, except for the relevant portions.
