Can't open in WinXP after successful install

This looks like a great program, and I'm very excited about it, but after successfully completing the install on Windows XP, running zweistein.exe does not start the application.  The process does appear in the task manager, but nothing happens, even after several minutes.  I tried downloading the ZIP archive and "manually" installing, but I get the same results.  I'm running WinXP Service Pack 2, a P4 2.8 GHz w/hyper threading, 1 GB of RAM, a GeForce 6600 GT, and my latest BIOS update, so I'd think I'm meeting any system requirements.  I've looked through the forum and the online documentation, and I seem to be the only one having this problem.  Am I missing something obvious?  Thanks in advance for any insight.

I get the same problem too.

I get the same problem too. I suspect its because
I'm using a firewall app that's blocking applications
from accessing the network. I'll try again
without firewall later when disconnected.

Okay, this is just weird...

I thought I'd try to run ZS4 again a couple hours later just for the heck of it, and now it magically works.  I had already tried restarting the machine, so I know that's not it, and I can't figure out anything else I might have done/changed.  I do run dual displays, and I've been playing a game for a little while, so I had switched to a single display, and I switched back to dual display once I quit and before I tried again to start ZS4.  That's the only thing even remotely related that's happened.  I'll update if the problem repeats and any source of trouble becomes obvious.  I'm completely puzzled for the moment, though.

Confirming this behavior

Version 951 seems to have a problem launching in WinXP SP2.  After upgrading from previous version of ZS4, which worked fine, this won't launch but maybe one time in 10 attempts.  It appears as a process (NOT an application) in task manager, but no window appears.  On those seldom occassions that it launches properly there is no accounting for the reason why.  Gremlins, maybe.

possible workaround

You can try to remove the following dll file:

C:\Program Files\t@b\0.951\686\mmwmed.dll

Delete it and zs4 might start up. what you loose is the ability to output wmv files, but that can be done using windows media encoder from billyboy.

new to video

Hi Everyone,

I'm virtually new to video and have been surfing

to find a good editor. This site came up first and
zweistein software really looks good.

Could anybody tell me if there is a list of older
versions still available for download? I use xp.
Thanks for your help.

I dont use wmv anyway....

I had the same problem, it would only open one in 30 or so tries. Whenever I did it, when I tried to turn off my pc I got lots of messages about zwe-stein not closing. I just did the workaround, and it works. I don't use WMV anyway, but even if I wanted to use that horribl, horrible format I have a multimedia format converter.

Same symptoms with 952

Loaded 952 on XP SP2 laptop last night. ZS4 loaded only once in many, many tries. Other times the .exe file listed as a process but taking slim to no processor time. Suppose if I waited long enough ZS4 would have opened, but I gave up after 10 to 15 minutes. Unable to locate the .dll file mentioned in the work-a-round so unable to give that option a try.

Have not tried 952 on my desktop yet. May stick with 951 which does work there until I have some version of ZS4 working here.

thanks

thanks for the feedback.

The mmwmed.dll no longer comes with zs4 (we're not in the encoding biz).

I will keep trying to recreate the problem here (have not succeeded yet doing that).

SP2?

Does your desktop have SP2 as well?

Yes, SP2 on both machines

Yes the desktop does have SP2. Both machines have all subsequent
hotfixes MS has notified me of and are running the same
versions of Tiny Firewall for firewall and McAfee for virus scanner.

I still have the install file for 951. Will reinsall on the laptop when
I get a chance and let you know what happens. Probably be a couple days.

Thnks for the quick response and attention.

SP1 Here

Love the app!
Ok! Something strange on my comp(maybe you have too):to start zs4 I have to alternatively change the "tabdec.dll" state (on/off)---if zs4 doesn't start I kill it in taskmanager then I am changeing the extension of tabdec.dll and zs4 starts. If I close it then open it again it doesn't start! Again! So I go and "activate" tabdec.dll. This is my behaviour of zs4 on my comp!

excellent thanks

this looks like very good feedback! I'll have a look at this later today. Thanks at ton!

Starting zs4

The program comes up in task manager as a process.  Stop the process and try starting the program again while task manager is open.  This always works for me.

same problem (XP SP2)

>The program comes up in task manager as a process.  Stop the process and try starting the program again while task manager is open.  This always works for me.

Tried that, didn't work, just tried opening it again and it's working.

Is there an older version that didn't have this problem ?

Same prob, 0.952 WinXP, some diags

I'm having the same problem: process starts, no application window or appl.
Once out of 20 or 30 tries, the ZS4 workspace appears. Pretty random. Using procexp I found:

I tried "hiding" tabdec.dll (by renaming), but that didn't seem to relate to whether the application started or not. The last time zs4 started it was hidden, but then without changing anything it failed to start several times. As noted I'm running XP (Pro), with all MS patches up to date.

It would be more than just pleasant to get this problem resolved. Can't do very much.
But grinning.

curious, i am

hi grinbig, thanks for all this work. I'm suspecting that those with problems have really fast machines.

I'm wondering if perhaps this file will run better:

http://devel.zs4.net/t@b_zweistein_win32_686_0604132204.exe

after un-installing v0.952

Hmm...

One time it is opening next time only the process. A little better for me, but...

zweistein.exe 0.953,

zweistein.exe 0.953, (installed after fully uninstalling 0.952), ran the first time, but not again on several attempts. A process started, but no window opened and no application appeared in the Windows Task Manager. Each time I killed the process and tried starting it again. Again, without luck.
I don't know what information will be helpful, but I'm [sending by personal message] the following collected from Process Explorer (procexp). Also, since you mentioned it, I'm running XP Pro on a Dell 8400, a hyperthreaded dual core P4, 3.20GHz, 512MB ram. I'm running McAfee VirusScan, CyberLink PowerCinema DVDLauncher, DLA (Drive Letter Access), and Daemon Tools SCSI Pass Through Driver (spdt, emulated DVD drive). (I'd have to uninstall Daemon Tools apparently to be able to debug zweistein to see where it actually stopped. When I try to invoke debug in procexp zweistein process dies/exits.
Good luck,
keep smiling.

Same problem w/ Win2K SP4

I'm going to uninstall 0.952 and try 0.953.

...

Same problem with 0.953. I am running a P4 2.3 GHz w/ 3GB RAM, ATI 9700, and dual monitors.

Further notes

I just got version 954 and it has the same behavior on my system, as does the above link to 953. I would note also that I am running windows xp pro with service pack 1 (I have some programs that for whatever reason flip out when I try to install SP2). Oddly enough, when I run the executable (and it shows up in the running processes), I am unable to open Windows Explorer. There seems to be a hang in windows which prevents both windows from opening, maybe the same problem? Once I end the process "zweistein.exe" then Windows Explorer pops right up. Very strange.

Specs for the interested:

athlon xp 2500+ (barton), Radeon 9600 Pro, 1gb ram, XP Pro sp1, Sygate Personal Firewall (now sadly owned by Symantec), AVG antivirus

The Taskbar trick works

I've seen this too and it's a brand new install of 0.954, if I start it and go to Task Manager, it always gets stuck at 25,3xx k or so.  I stop the process then I restart the app with the Task Manager open and it speeds all the way up to 100mb and then works.

File Monitor

I used File Monitor and after a couple of tries I see how ZS4 stops with Query Information to Msctf.dll. By stops, i mean that the process apears, but not the gui (the actual app).
I have no idea what this means, but hope this helps you.

peace out!

Feedback Asked

Hmm, does this one start up (tentative v0.955)
http://devel.zs4.org/t@b_zweistein_win32_test.exe
Since the problem is not reproducible on any of our boxes, this is as far as I got with the problem...

I belive

that what you doing is the right thing. I started like 7 times and it worked everytime. Even though is early to say, but I think we have a winner.
Good times. You rock!

Peace out!

thank u 2, tekNerd

you've been a great help, not just for me. obviously for other visitors of this website. I'll make sure this is generally available before next week.

Well Done

That solved it... Thanks

Problems in XP64

I have been running V0.958 for 3 days fine, then after I attempted to delete one of 4 tracks in a sub-mixers it froze.  I had to kill it after a while and I tried it again several times with the same result.  However, now it will start and die on its own after like 5 minutes with this error every time.

Darn because it was an easy program to learn and seemed to be running flawlessly up to this point. It does seem to be a great program.  Let me know if you can help or if you want me to debug this problem/give more info.

Problems in XP64 solved with reinstall

Ok great All I had to do was uninstall reboot and reinstall and it seems to be stable again.

Whew I thought it was going to start working the way my Media player works.
Which is to die every 2 minutes.

Thanks Im back editing video again.
